Surf Hardware
So you have your wetsuit, rashvest, and boardies for the beach and warm sea conditions, but don't forget about your surf hardware and surf accessories.
Buying Your Surfboard
First on your shopping list is going to be your surfboard, whether it is a fast thruster shortboard for those sharp cutting turns off the top, or a minimal fun board for a range of wave conditions. Along with your wetsuit it's probably the most vital piece of surf hardware that you are going to buy, so make sure it suits your surfing level and requirements.
Essential Surfboard Accessories
To help adjust your surfboard to the wave conditions and your style of surfing you can change the fins. FCS are the trailblazers in surfboard fin technology with the majority of the WCS pro riders using FCS fins. Just a quick reminder though, don't forget your FCS fin key. To protect yourself and other surfers from a nasty connection with the tip of your surfboard you can place a rubber nose guard on the front of the board. You can also place a tail guard on the rear of the board to prevent dings and damage to your surfboard's tail.
Extra Surf Trimmings
A leash connects your stick to your leg via an ankle strap and strong polyurethane cable, ensuring that your surfboard doesn't run off in the waves. The cable length of the leash varies depending upon the size of your board and the size of the waves you will be surfing. Some leashes feature internal pockets for keys and coins.
Good Surfboard Maintenance
A further surf accessory required for surfing is wax for your surfboard, and a wax comb. Wax is used to coat the deck of the surfboard to help provide traction between the surfer's feet and the surfboard, and a wax comb can be used to remove excess wax from the surfboard or to rough up a fresh layer. The water temperature of the sea determines the grade of surf wax required. To assist with your grip you can also place a tail grip or deck grip on your surfboard. This is a padded grip that sits on the rear of your board to improve traction, enabling the surfer to improve control of your board whilst surfing.
Surfboard Storage Options
Of course, to travel around with your board you are also going to need a good quality board bag to protect it from being damaged on route to the surf. These come in varying sizes to fit the shape, size, and number of surfboards you will be carrying. When purchasing a surfboard bag you must also consider the amount of padding for the boards, the more padding the greater the degree of protection, and this means less unnecessary dings. Stash pockets are great if the board bag has them, but a good padded carrying strap is very important. If your surfboard does not fit inside your car then you may need a roof rack for your board. There are various padded roof racks designed for carrying surfboards, but a good board bag will protect the board from damage by tight straps.
