Rashvests are a long or short sleeve tops made of a thin layer of lycra/polyester which can be up to 0.5mm in thickness. Thicker versions of the rashvest, sometimes called a jacket or hotskin, are made of stretchable neoprene between 1mm to 2mm in thickness and they are efficient at keeping the surfer warm. Also available is the surf tee, a fitted T-shirt made of a cotton and polyester mix, which is quick dry, and also offers UV protection. The surf tee gives the surfer added flexibility as it can be worn on the streets and in the sea.
Neoprene In Surfing Conditions
Neoprene surf wetsuits are great for surfing in cold water conditions, but in warm water you will over heat. When warm seas and weather make wearing a surf wetsuit unsuitable, surfers still need a layer on their upper body to protect their skin from getting a rash from the friction of lying on the surfboard and the pounding waves. A rashvest will offer this protection, plus UV protection from the suns rays and can be worn under a wetsuit to offer additional insulation.
