Animal did not begin as an active water sports clothing brand. The Animal surf company was originally conceived in 1987 by two surfers that were frustrated with continuously losing their watches as the straps would break in the extreme surfing conditions. The two UK surfers came up with a solution to resolve the problem by using a webbing and Velcro strap.
Production of the Animal watch straps began in small quantities in the back bedroom at one of their mother’s houses. The surfers sold their surf watch straps to their surfing buddies and the money they raised paid for surf trips to exotic surfing locations in Hawaii, the spiritual home of surfing, and the amazing surf spots along Australia’s Gold Coast. In Australia and Hawaii they sold more of the watch straps to surfers and water sports fanatics.
The simple and rugged watch strap was suitable for other action sports such as windsurfing, snowboarding, skateboarding, and mountain biking. The watch strap quickly became a success and the Animal surf brand was born. The surf company began to produce Animal sports watches for surfers and freesports enthusiasts. The great looking Animal watches were water resistant, functional, and were a phenomenal success.
Building on their success with surf watches they began to produce a range of men’s Animal surf clothing. This proved to be a success and they began to produce a fantastic range of Animal ladies clothing that was great as surf wear at the beach, or street wear. This included Animal ladies t-shirts, hoodies, bikinis, board shorts, walk shorts and accessories.
The Animal surf company has continued to show its commitment to the water sports that helped make it successful with sponsorship of female surfers , snowboarders, windsurfers, kite surfers, wake boarders, and exciting events such as the Animal British Cup.
